Is the hype around AI distracting SMEs from more basic digital transformations?

Sometimes, yes. AI can’t compensate for missing basics like good data organization, clear processes, or digital workflows. In many cases, SMEs benefit more from fixing those foundations first and then using AI on top of them. AI works best when the basics are already in place.

Yes.But it depends on the SME’s digital maturity. There’s a growing pattern where SMEs jump to “AI adoption” before fixing foundational digital gaps ...and that often leads to disappointment.
